Increase Traffic through Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
There are three different ways people will access a website:
- Direct access – by typing in the URL for your website and going straight to it. Most people will do this if they see your URL on a business card, email marketing campaign, advertisement, etc.
- Referred access – as a referral from another website. Perhaps your website is listed in a directory, business publication, or on another website owned by you or someone else.
- Search engine – when your website shows up when someone searches on a key word which is used by the search engine to find your website and display it as a search result.
Everything you publish should include your website address on it. This will promote as much direct access as possible. Plus, you should add your website to every possible directory – professional directories, associations, Yelp, City Search, Chamber of Commerce, etc. Some directories, like the Yahoo directory will list you for an annual fee, while others will list it for free. Set up email link exchanges with everyone you know who has a website. You show a link to their website in exchange for them showing a link to your website.
Search engines use a combination of directories, referral links, and key words for inclusion in search results. So the more directories you are listed in, and the more links exist to your website on other websites, and better optimized your key words are, the higher your website will be listed in search results.
